Tech Lessons

Here you can catch up on all the professional development that has gone on in the Teacher Tech Group.

Wikis in the classroom

How are wikis being used in the classroom. First off, I use them in my kinesiology class to create fitness programs. The students research exercises for different parts (strength, flexibility, cardiovascular, etc.) of a workout for a particular sport, such as soccer, and put their program online. http://kinesiology.wikispaces.com. Here's some other examples of how educators are using wikis:

DE Streaming - Lesson #1

This tutorial shows you how to use Discovery Education Streaming. This is a free resource to all GUSD teachers. It is a rich resource that centers on using & sharing videos, images, & sound. The library contains thousands of content from TV and other media. DE Streaming also includes several learning tools such as QuizBuilder and AssignmentBuilder for creating student-accessible activities for viewing videos and answering questions at home via the internet.

If you don't yet have a Discovery Education login, email me and I'll send you easy instructions for creating your account. The video below is about 5min. long - if it doesn't work try clicking here to watch it.

Windows Briefcase

Briefcase is a file folder system that allows to you take portable files with you, make changes on other machines, and update the original file at any time. Here's what's cool about it; you can store files from your home computer on a flash drive, take them to school, change them, then return to home and have all the changes you made automatically synchronize with the originals on your home computer. Requires a USB (flash) drive.

On your home computer:

  1. Plug a USB (flash) drive into your home computer & open up the drive.

  2. Click File New on the menu (or right-click and go to File New) and click Briefcase.

  3. Name the briefcase relative to the files it will contain, ex. "Chapter 14".

  4. Copy & paste or drag-n-drop files into this briefcase (you may also add folders to organize your briefcase).

  5. Safely remove the USB drive.

On my school computer:

  1. Plug the USB drive into my home PC.

  2. Open the Briefcase, and click once to highlight "Muscles Lesson Plan".

  3. In the menu at the top of the window, select "Update Selection". The briefcase searches to see which version is newer - the one at home or the one on my flash drive. Since the one on my flash drive is more updated, the Briefcase chooses to replace the file on my home PC with the flash drive version. A window pops up asking me to approve these changes - click OK.

  4. The change is made and now I have identical, updated copies on both my flash drive and my home PC. The file still exists on my flash drive until I delete it.

How can you use Briefcase?  If I'm teaching chapter 14 over the next couple weeks, I will keep copies of all chapter 14 files, ie. labs, assignments, and notes on my flash drive. That way I can be prepared by keeping that flash drive at school. As I teach and realize I need to tweak my assignments, the briefcase in keeping track of any changes I make. After I'm done with chapter 14, I simply take my flash drive home and synchronize it with my home PC. Keeping only one chapter's worth saves flash drive space and helps keep me prepared for those weeks. After the final synchronization, I will delete that Briefcase and start a new one for the next chapter.

 DE Streaming Lesson #2

In this lesson, you'll learn how to easily create online quizzes using DE Streaming's QuizBuilder. These short quizzes are great for doing quick formative assessments or getting your class interested in the next novel you're reading. To watch the tutorial, click here or click the play button on the video screen below (may not show on school computers).

Once you have created a quiz, you can share the link with your students to watch videos and take the related quiz. To see the tutorial on how to do this, click here.
